what subject?

It’s that time of the year and you need to select subjects for your senior schooling. You can only choose a few because English and maths (and VET subjects) are required. So begins the decision making process - is it going to be easy or traumatic?

A couple of things to consider before you decide on your final options, regardless of whether you choose and ATAR or VET pathway:

  • some subjects will give you a good foundation for specific tertiary studies (science, maths, engineering).

  • you select these subjects for two years…

  • …so you have better be prepared to face that timetable for two years!

  • Choose subjects that YOU like - this is your senior school journey.

  • Consider choosing a mix of subjects based on the skills you will develop (research, essays, referencing, public speaking etc).

There are some good resources that provide career details about each subject you can select at school. Good career decisions are based on research and conversations. Maybe do the following as part of your research:

  • speak to the subject teacher or head of faculty.

  • attend subject selection nights organised by your school.

  • talk to students who are studying the subjects in senior - ask the teacher for recommendations.

Check out the following websites that provide information about senior school subjects:

Good luck. Regardless of your selectins, remember to enjoy the journey.
